Term One Notice 2019
14th February 2019
Tena Koutou Parents/Caregivers,
My name is Matua Willard and I am very excited to be the classroom teacher for your child in Room 6.
I was born and raised in Hamilton. I am married with two kids. I love sport, especially Cricket, Rugby and Basketball. My mother, and three of my siblings are all teachers, but I chose to work in Primary as opposed to High School. I genuinely enjoy coming to school, especially to catch up with students’ experiences here at school and at home.
I have already met some of our wonderful parents/kaitiaki (guardians) of our students in Room 6. Catching up with more of you at 'Meet the Teacher' will be awesome.
This year we will continue focusing on 'Growth Mindset'. Students who'll fall into the 'pit', will know that struggling is learning. We will identify ways to help them get out of this 'learning pit'. Our class will also conduct a group of fun challenges that will test their mindset. Fingers crossed.
This term we are focusing on ‘O’ for Organised. Please encourage your child to share their learning with you about how they are being organised in the classroom and with their extra-curricular activities. Students are able to earn reward coupons and go into a weekly draw to win prizes in school assemblies.
Mathematics – Measurement, Addition and Subtraction. This term we will be looking at strategies and knowledge based activities around these areas. We will be looking at possible ideas around length, width, distance, volume and time. All learning is based on our learners’ group and individual abilities. We aim to link this learning with meaningful tasks around swimming, distances from home to school and major events.
Please encourage your child to practise their timetables. Senior students will also continue with Mathletics, an online programme to support students with their learning.
Reading - Students have been grouped with other classmates in accordance to their level and reading age. Please encourage your child to read at home each night.
Writing - We will be focusing on linking our writing with our concept (refer to concept below). Teachers will also explore other expository texts in accordance to the needs of your child from the previous year’s data.
Concept - We will be investigating the Kingitanga and Poukai (displaced Maori due to war and battles), the Treaty of Waitangi, NZ History and Land Wars within the Waikato region.
We will also be continuing with our Mindfulness and Growth Mindset programs to ensure that students are aware of their abilities and how to overcome new learning that may seem difficult.
ICT - Students will continue to use Mathletics as part of their Numeracy learning. They will also use IPads that have educational applications that consolidates their learning and interaction with others.
Maori - Every week students will be exposed to Maori words/phrases based between the levels 1 & 2 of the curriculum. Kapa Haka will not be available for this term as we are competing with a strict swimming timetable.
P.E. - This term we will be focusing on specific stroke-based skills, breathing, floating and timed activities during their swimming time. Classes will be partnered up with another class. Non-swimmers will be participating in skill-based activities set by the teacher. Please remind students to bring their togs everyday. If they are unable to swim, they will need a note from home. The date for Senior Swimming Sports is not yet been confirmed, check school newsletter for confirmation.
Reminder to parents about our camp that is booked for early Term 4. Dates and costs are yet to be confirmed. We will have our annual meat raffle in Term 2 to help towards the camp cost. Small and large payments towards your child’s camp can now be paid at the school’s office. Weekly automatic payments can also be set up through the office.
Stationery lists have been sent home, please provide your child with the needed stationery as soon as possible so they can begin their learning straight away.
Please ensure your child is wearing clothing that is appropriate to the weather. Our school encourages each child to be wearing their ‘green’ hat in terms 1 & 4. Those without a hat, will need to play under designated shade areas. Hats can be purchased at the office.
Room 6 students are well aware of our classroom Treaty (expectations). We have a reward system for those who are continually on task, showing positive behaviour towards others in/out of class and in the playground.
Feel free to come in and have a chat, I am here most afternoons (bring some munchies), otherwise you can email me at email@example.com
Thank you for your continued support.
